Ascent Trip ReportThere is a community developing on the west side of Brown Mountain now. My son, Marshall, and I did not discover that it is possible to drive to the summit on a public gravel road until we had already hiked to the top. Upon arriving in the area, we asked a man what the best approach route would be and he suggested driving to Imperial Street, turning right and following it as far as we could. This distance turned out to be fairly short because the street turned into an ATV trail soon. We started climbing up the west slope of Brown Mountain after parking the car, but we quickly reached a posted sign. Being deep in the woods with no houses, we decided to proceed, especially since the man we talked to earlier told us this was a good route. We encountered a nice gravel road when we reached the summit after about .5 miles of hiking, but there was no summit view due to the forest. The highest point seemed to be on the east side of the road at the edge of the forest. If you can find how to access this gravel road, you can probably drive to the top of Brown Mountain. We were told this is a public road. |
