Ascent Trip Report

From CA 178 east of Lake Isabella turn south on McCray Rd for 1 mile to Cook Peak Rd. This unmaintained dirt road is very narrow and offers some exciting drop-offs as it switchbacks 2,500' or so up the dry, sagebrush-covered mountain. However, the grade averages less than 10%. After crossing a saddle (4.5 miles), the road steepens and in another 0.7 miles reaches the saddle next to Cook Peak. Park here. The road continues 0.1 mile to the radio tower and, separately, a path leads 0.1 mile to the old L.O. site at the summit of Cook Peak. Great views of Lake Isabella and peaks in the surrounding area
