Ascent Trip ReportI turned right off CA 139 at about the 5600' contour level on the Topo map and shortly before the highway bears NW and heads down to Eagle Lake. There is evidence of a recent fire in the immediate area. It was slow going 9.6 miles over often rough road to the top of Fredonyer Peak and the L.O, which dates to 1973. I found 4WD comforting, but perhaps not quite essential, in a few spots. It was a bright, sunny morning, but hazy with no sight of Mt. Shasta, which is very visible on a clear day. The L.O. was staffed by Jack Kessler, who shares the assignment with Bob Leathers. Jack is a particularly interesting old timer who has been with Calfire since the late 1940s. Calfire (CDF) is lucky to have had this man. Most L.O.s I've visited have been neat and well maintained, but the Fredonyer L.O. is a cut above them. It is immaculate and was upgraded last year with a polished wood floor which Jack and Bob installed. I was impressed to find Jack trimly dressed in his Calfire uniform--definitely from the "old school" and the likes of whom have all but disappeared in our much more casual world.
