Ascent Trip ReportSeveral miles south of the Collier Tunnel on CA 199, turn east and follow Little Jones Flat Rd (FSR 16, aka Jawbone Rd) for 10 miles past Bear Basin Rd (FSR 17N04) to a broad, open saddle which intersects the Ship Mountain Rd. Continue a short distance beyond the saddle into the 1/2-mile gated spur road that leads to Bear Basin Butte and its L.O. The walk in is a pleasant one through the lush mix of Siskiyou Mountain trees and shrubs. The road then transitions into a mostly tree-free manzanita area before climbing to a parking area below the L.O. (not regularly staffed). The L.O. was relocated from Camp Six in 1997. It and the attractive small building next to the parking area are available for rent. The location is truly marvelous with mountain vistas in every direction--a peaceful, calming spot, perfect for an overnight stay.
