Ascent Trip ReportI approached Bald Mountain from Retson Rd at Stirling City. The route to Bald Mountain is not obvious and there is no signage for it. My AAA map shows Retson Rd-Concow Rd-Philbrook Rd as a paved connection from Stirling City to Philbrick Reservoir. However, Retson immediately becomes a dirt road, descending 3.4 miles to cross the West Branch of the Feather River. Thanks to directions from a lone roadside worker I happened to pass, I was able to patch my way without the benefit of a map to Bald Mountain. 2.2 miles from the Feather River bridge, turn left at a junction (a partial sign said "T-line") and proceed 0.5 mile to a disturbed area of logging activity. Here I turned right on a good dirt road for 3.5 miles to the open summit area of Bald Mountain, its Calfire L.O., and a full panorama. Lassen Peak, Brokeoff Mountain, and Spanish Peak were among the peaks in view. |
