Ascent Trip ReportAfter visiting Round Mountain L.O. and Medicine Lake, I drove south on NFR 49 in search of Bear Mountain L.O., aka 'Siskiyou' Bear to distinguish it from 'Shasta' Bear Mountain L.O, near Redding. A sign at the junction of NFR 49 and 3 (Hambone) noted "Bear Mountain L.O.--7 miles." That was the only reference I found to the L.O. I was completely on my own with my maps next to useless. Finally, after some "blind alleys," I persevered and found the route. Turn easterly on FSR 40N08 from NFR 49 approx. 0.6 mile north of the NFR 49/NFR 15 (Harris Springs Rd). Continue on FSR 40N08 ignoring various spurs and crossing the railroad tracks at 1.1 miles; then 3.7 miles to an unsigned spur road on the left at the top of the hill just before the main road heads downhill. (Do not be discouraged by the rough road that traverses about 1/2 mile of devastatingly logged SPI land.) Drive the spur road 0.4 mile to a locked gate and park. From here it is less than a 30-minute road walk to Calfire's unstaffed 'Siskiyou' Bear Mountain L.O. Good views of Mt. Shasta. Although it was a real puzzle to find my way up, I had no difficulty returning 5.2 miles from the locked gate to NFR 49.
