Ascent Trip ReportFrom Paynes Creek on CA 36 take Lanes Valley Rd approx 7 miles to Manton Rd (A6) and another 7 miles to Manton. The approach to Digger Butte is very confusing owing to a network of often unsigned secondary roads. My NF and DeLorme maps were useless. Without very helpful directions from the driver of a passing pickup truck, I would have given up in frustration. He directed me to an unsigned dirt road heading east from Ponderosa Way, Once on this road there were a couple of signs reading 95G. After 2.5 miles gradually uphill through the trees on this key road, a spur road turns left (northerly)for 0.4 mile to a locked gate. From here it is a very short distance via footpath to Calfire's deserted Digger Butte L.O. atop a rocky outcrop poking above the surrounding densely forested area. I returned to Ponderosa Way, then to Rock Creek Rd and CA 44 west of Viola. Connection with CA 89 through Hat Creek Valley took me to CA 299 and south to Burney.
