Ascent Trip ReportI led this Sierra Club trip. We packed in from the Kings Canyon trailhead on Friday up to East Lake; spent a quiet day on Saturday in preparation for Mt. Brewer on Sunday. After climbing Brewer, three of us got down to the saddle between Brewer and South Guard and climbed along the jagged ridge over a couple gendarmes before reaching the easy slopes of South Guard. Getting down the sandy slopes from this peak to the lakes below was easy, but traversing past the lakes was sometimes difficult, esp. Lake Reflection, though very pretty. We got back to camp just before dark. The next morning, Anna was the only person willing to go after Mt. Erikkson. Anna and I found the trail leading up beyond Golden Lake, where we got off it to climb up to Lucy's foot path. We ended up climbing several of the adjacent buttes before discovering that the northern-most butte was highest. The last 30 feet of steep class 3 was rather difficult, but after spending some time really enjoying view on top, we came down. On reaching camp, we saw the rest had gone down lower as they said they would the prior evening, and we continued down until, when it had just become too difficult to see, we found Charlette Creek and our party waiting patiently for us. Everyone was happy and we all packed out to reach the trailhead at 1 pm the next day. |
