Ascent Trip ReportJust beyond Shelly Rd on Ager Rd north of Montague enter the chained (but unlocked) dirt road with a small sign reading "Paradise Craggy Rd." I saw no trespassing or private property signs as I passed through four chained gates, first over open, rolling hills, then climbing to the ridge, 3.8 miles from Ager Rd. At the saddle (approx. 4,300') there was a "graveyard" of a dozen or so vehicles and trucks, all in great disrepair. The ridgetop road to the left leads to a dwelling zealously guarded by a pack of loudly barking dogs--at least a dozen of them of various sizes and breeds. Although the dogs barked loudly, they didn't come after me and no one appeared to object to my presence. The dogs were so insistent that I call the ridge "Barking Dog Ridge." I parked near the dilapidated vehicles and continued on foot toward Paradise Craggy. Soon, rounding a corner, I encountered a locked gate. Once I rounded the corner, the dogs stopped barking. It was about 2/3 mile beyond the gate to impressive Paradise Craggy and Calfire's poorly maintained Paradise Craggy L.O. (no longer regularly staffed). It is impressively perched on the 50'-60' summit crag, accessed by many steep steps chiseled into the rock. The outhouse is also in an airy position. Good views of Mt. Shasta, Black Butte, Shasta Valley, Willow Creek Mountain, and the I-5 traffic far below.
