Ascent Trip Report

On day one, Rick Chval, Al Craun and I backpacked from Whitney Portal up the trail to the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, then followed an occasional use trail up to upper Boy Scout Lake, where we set up camp. Later that day, our group headed off to climb Thor Peak. From Bob Scout Lake, we followed a circuitous route southward towards Pinnacle Ridge, then ascended diagonally from the west up class 2 talus to some ledges, then climbed the class 3 ledges westward to Pinnacle Pass, then climbed up the peak's class 2 West Arête to the top. Afterwards, we followed our ascent route back to camp. The next day, we made our way over to the base of Mount Carillon's south slope, then climbed up the snow covered slope using an ice ax and crampons to the plateau located south of Mount Carillon, dropped off the ice gear, then continued up to the Russell-Carillon Saddle. From there, we climbed up the peak's class 2 west ridge to the summit. Afterwards, we returned to our camp at Upper Boy Scout Lake. On the third day, we backpacked out to the vehicle.

We had also intended to climb Mount Russell, but felt the peak's East Arête Route had too much snow on it.

Please see my 07-04-1982 Mount Carillon trip report for additional trip stats and details.
