Ascent Trip ReportMy approach was from the Bald Mountain Rd 3.3 miles north of the Dinkey Creek Rd. I had thought this OHV road would provide a good workout for my new Toyota 4Runner SR5. Not so. The initial steep, rutted slope quickly convinced me to park instead and enjoy a nice hike. The route is easy to follow along the jeep track with occasional signs tacked on trees. After about 1.5 miles the forest gives way to more open territory, and the lookout tower standing on its barren rock perch on the summit ridge of Bald Mountain comes into view. The last mile is mostly over the granite outcrop that covers most of the area. From the summit the view is extensive with Shaver Lake beckoning to the west below. Though the cab has been vandalized and the L.O. long since abandoned, the tower is sturdy and readily climbed. It is plainly visible from Shaver Lake.
