Ascent Trip ReportTake CA 180 East (Kings Canyon Rd) out of Fresno, driving 7 miles past the Kings Canyon N.P. entrance to the Generals Hwy. Turn right, travel 7 miles toward the Sequoia National Forest boundary and turn left on Big Meadows Rd (FSR 14S11) At Buck Rock Campground, make a left onto FSR 13S04 until it deadends at a parking area. It is less than a 1/2-mile stroll from here to the base of Buck Rock with its L.O. perched impressively atop the airy summit. A series of over 170 steps climb 140 feet to the L.O. tower, certainly. along with Sierra Buttes L.O., one of the most impressively located fire lookouts in the state. The current structure, built in 1923, is historically significant as one of the earliest 4A-style live-in cabs, of which only three remain. The L.O. is staffed throughout fire season with a dedicated volunteer staff supported by the Buck Rock Foundation. Surely no L.O. offers a more sweeping, impressive view of the Sierra--Spanish Mountain, Mt. Goddard, Mt. Clarence King, Mt. Gardiner, Mt. Brewer, Thunder Mountain, Table Mountain, Milestone Mountain, Sawtooth Peak to name the most prominent.
