Ascent Trip Report

L'Étale, 2483m, P997m

Map: 1:25k: 3531OT

Stats: 1380mH, 6.5km

Time: 1 Sep 06, ascent 3:05, descent 2:05

Start: from SW, L’Arblay, 5km SE of Manigod

Route: mapped path via Tardevant Chalet, direct steep grassy ascent NE to col, cairned paintmarked route via dirty-looking col immediately N of summit, steeply to summit. Descent to Tardevant Chalet via longer mapped track.

Difficulties: two passages mapped as “passage delicat”. The lower, above the Chalet, is simple. The long stretch culminating at the summit involves steep scree and very steep scrambling. Holds are good, but close attention to paintmarking needed to avoid awkward situations, and descent is a little daunting. Nettles surround the Chalet.

Trig point: 15cm granite block in concrete base, “IGN” and “1954” on faces of block; “witches hat” shelter similar to Mont Trelod etc.

Notes: varied scenic approach to impressive impregnable-looking peak; compact rocky summit, huge clear view. Descending Foiroux stonefield, a sign on boulder at path fork on suggests a “belle descente” exists westwards. I initially tried the more direct ascent (mapped path) from La Charmette, but start is obscure, not signposted, and track itself apparently disappears after 200m or so into dense forest. I could find no prior info on this route - just used the map. 15 Chamois crossing boulderfield. Frequent stonefall (not affecting ascent route) may have been due to the Chamois, or simply overnight frost thawing. 2 Apollo butterflies on descent.
