Ascent Trip Report

Just south of Beegum turn off CA 36 and follow Tedoc Rd (FS 45) for approx. 19 miles over Tedoc Gap to its intersection with FS 35 at the intriguingly named Rat Trap Gap, which seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Follow FS 35 13+ to the junction with Tomhead Mountain Rd, which leads 6.3 miles farther uphill on FSR 27N06 to Tomhead Mountain and the isolated, staffed L.O. The gate was open 0.5 mile below the L.O. A long drive of 38+miles from Beegum. Though I arrived at 6:20P after visiting hours, Rachel Lynn, the colorful veteran staffer was welcoming and full of interesting lookout lore. I spent half an hour talking with her in the cab and taking in the grand view of the Sacramento Valley below, Mt. Linn, and the ever prominent Bully Choop. It was a two-hour drive back down the mountain to Red Bluff via FS 35, Pettyjohn Rd, Four Corners, and Reeds Creek Rd
