Ascent Trip ReportThis was a nice gentle 2 hour rest day peak, after yesterday's Crazy Peak. Discovering Edward Earl was in Bozeman we met him there for lunch.
From I-90 j306 we follow US 86 northeast for approx 20 miles then turn L at N45.89460 W110.87819 onto Fairy Lake Road (dirt, a little rough but ok for normal cars) signposted Fairy Lake, and following it for 6 miles (fork R in about 1 mile at N45.89563 W110.90035) to the Fairy Lake trailhead. We park here (N45.90683 W110.96040, 2323m) as the final short section of road to the Sacagawea trailhead (N45.90711 W110.96298, 2340m) is barriered off although it has a parking area, signboard and toilets.
We hike at 14:25, soon reaching the upper trailhead and taking the obvious foot trail L. This climbs gently through open forest, then zigzags uphill. At N45.90352 W110.96607 is an obscure fork with the main trail R; a rougher trail L is slightly shorter. The trails rejoin at N45.90271 W110.96741 and continue up a short valley with quite rugged hillsides L and R show displaying steep well defined strata. The trail zigzags easily up to a saddle (cairn and barely legible signpost).
At the saddle (N45.90015 W110.97577, cairn) we take the L trail which makes an ascending traverse just R (W) of the ridgeline then zigzags more steeply up a short stony slope to the summit (N45.89580 W110.96847, 2941m, rock outcrop). We arrive at 1635 ie 2h10 ascent. The views both ways along the ridge are attractive and the route S looks to be a nice arete. However with intermittent light rain, we resist the temptation to extend the walk, and head back down after 10 mins. We are down at 17:32 in about 50 mins. Our rental car is almost out of fuel adding a little excitement to the trip as we coast most of the way back downhill to Bozeman where we find a filling station, then a motel for the night. Next day we head for Cloud Peak.
