Ascent Trip ReportFrom Massie Gap, I followed a trail a half mile until I met up with the AT, which I followed to the Mt. Rogers Trail, which in turn took me to the summit of Mt. Rogers. Along the way, I took several side trails or short bushwhacks or scrambles to visit other minor peaks in the area.
One of the side excursions was the Wilbur Ridge Trail, which branches off from the AT and parallels it for a mile before rejoining. The trail took me along Wilbur Ridge, following lots of interesting rocky terrain. I would recommend that trail as a worthwhile detour on the way to or from Mt. Rogers, for those looking for an added challenge.
As an afterthought, I added on the Big Pinnacle Trail at the end. This trail reaches two other nearby peaks, Big Pinnacle and Haw Orchard Mountain (a.k.a. Little Pinnacle), and also leads to the nearby visitor center. Big Pinnacle provides a view north toward Mt. Rogers and the other nearby smaller peaks. Haw Orchard Mountain offers an amazing panoramic view toward the south into North Carolina and Tennessee, over mountainous terrain that stretches as far as the eye can see.
