Ascent Trip ReportMy friend Ionel came up from RI to meet me at Pine Knoll Campground in Albany, NH and after having a couple of beers and catching up, we decided to climb Mt. Chocorua the next day. We took the Champney Falls Trail up, starting at the parking area on the Kancamagus Highway. The trail was dry and easy to follow for the entire hike. At 1.4 miles, we took the trail branching to the left to visit Pitcher and Champney Falls. According to the people that I spoke to while I was out in NH, they haven't had much rain in the last few weeks either so the falls were at a trickle. We finished the 0.4 mile loop and rejoined the main trail 1.7 miles.
From there the hike continued at a steady grade and we stopped to rest at a nice lookout near the junction with the trail to the 3 Sisters. At 0.6 miles left to go, the trail joins with the Piper Trail to the summit. With maybe 0.4 miles to go we came out of the trees and were rock hopping the rest of the way. There were a few places were the rock was eroding and looked like wet sand, but it was like concrete to the touch. This was something that I hadn't seen before really thought it was cool. Getting to the actual summit was a bit tricky because the yellow paint blazes are pretty faded, but the easiest (safest) way is to go to the right around the summit rocks and from there it's an easy 20 foot climb to the top. Great views and a strenuous climb made this trip well worth it. |
