Ascent Trip ReportI started at the trailhead on FR134, 12 mi. in from the NF boundary. It's a well-constructed trail that makes a gradual ascent into the Latir Wilderness, skirting very close to the summit of Baldy Mountain (not the higher and more prominent peak by the same name in nearby Colfax C.). There are the inevitable downed trees, but less than on most trails that are not highly traveled, and it's easy footing nearly all of the way. The trail climbs about 600 feet in the first 0.8 mi., probably the steepest stretch on the whole trail. You then hit an abandoned forest road and traverse some meadows before another shorter ascent starting just after the 2 mi. mark. There's a bit of up and down until the final ascent across the west flank of Baldy Mountain. The trail passes very close to but slightly west and about 80 feet below the hp. On the way out, I left the trail just southeast of the hp and bushwhacked on my GPS heading (easy going through not very dense trees to the bare area on top).
From there I followed the bare ridge veering slightly east of my GPS heading for Baldy Cabin Peak to stay on the high ground into the col at just over 11,800 feet. I headed up the slope from the south and slightly to the west of a direct route to avoid the steepest part. Great views of all the Latir Peaks and well beyond at the top.
On the return I took a route slightly west of my route in heading around the west flank of Baldy Mountain and rejoining the trail about a quarter mile nw of where I had left it on my ascent. An easy return although there is a bit of elevation gain on the way down as you pass over several small ridges.
