Ascent Trip Report

We did this route for this reason. We had camped at the TH for the south route, but it rained all night and kept raining in the morning, and we feared that the dirt road would only get worse if we waited. So we drove down the extremely slippery road that several times made us fear we would slide right off over the edge, but I was somehow able to manage keeping the 4Runner on the road with the 4WD. The bad weather looked to be there to stay, so we headed north toward our next target. But as we drove I kept watching the rear-view mirror for signs of improving weather, and at one point it did look like the rain had quit at least. So we turned around and drove back, but were loathe to return to the south side so we drove up to New Canyon Creek instead and parked at the gate. When we first hit the north ridge we could see an ugly looking storm approaching, so we thought about heading down a different ridge than we had ascended and giving up on Oxford for that day. But we hated to throw away all that effort, so we headed back up the ridge, then got down under some trees for the storm. After that cleared off the weather remained quite good for the rest of the day and our perseverance got us a much desired peak.
