Ascent Trip ReportA woods road/bushwack/animal path hike ..... 6.2km, 2h50 hours RT.
This County has 2 Candidate High Point Areas, both located on the USA/CA Border, 200M apart.
My TH was the parking area, on the east side of Hwy 173 (Route du President Kennedy) 1.8km north of the USA/CA Border. The Google satellite map clearly shows the route described here.
I walked the woods road east (signed Domtar, everything around here seems to be signed Domtar) .5km stayed left at the fork, .4km stayed right at the second fork, 1km (after the height-of-land) the road bends/descends to the left. This was the start of my bushwack, GPS 45.82724,-70.38248. Prior to arriving here I went by the large old forested area on the right.
I left the road heading east where I picked up a badly overgrown track that climbs 100M to a large old forested clearing. I stayed/bushwacked east to the USA/CA Boundary Line Swath, following animal paths off/on. The area is dense waist high grass/bushes, deadfall and numerous wet spot to contend with. The bushwack .5km is not difficult but the footing is very poor.
At the Boundary Line Swath (solidly covered with tall grass/ferns) which has a good animal path, I turned left and followed the path over 2 bumps to the summit of Area 1. The obvious rounded summit is 30M to the left of the Boundary Line on the Canadian side, in tall dense brush with a few small trees.
I finally found the BM beside the small trees embedded in a 12" square concrete base, covered with moss and not readable "Geodetic Survey of Canada, 09210 ??", my GPS 45.82920,-70.37231. I orange flagged the spot.
The distance from the TH to Area 1 is estimated at 2.9km which I ascended in 1h20 hours and descended in 50 minutes.
From Area 1 I went eastbound on the Swath 200M to summit Area 2. I actually went too far and by chance ran into the only BM I saw on the Swath "United States/Canada, 348 No 21". The high ground on the Swath is 40M west of this BM.
The HP is inside the Canadian woods at 4M, at a large tree with steel rods nailed into it (ladder like), GPS 45.83019,-70.37103. I orange taped the spot.
I should note that 50M east of Area 1 on the Quebec side is well used Hunters Stand with a salt lick trap. This leads me to believe that perhaps there is an easier route to this area. No question that the bushwack section of my route will get worse as time passes.
The only difficult part of today's bushwack was the footing, otherwise its easy.
