Ascent Trip ReportPlacer Mountain is on the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve, owned by the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. Access is permitted only on guided hikes, which are offered approximately four times a year (spring and fall). These hikes are free, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. They tend to fill up, so early sign-up is recommended.
Refer to the web site at http://www.santafebotanicalgarden.org/category/upcoming-events/ortiz/ for upcoming dates. There are two versions of the hike - one uses 4WD vehicles to drive to the Old Ortiz Mine area and is listed as a 4-mile hike, the other walks the approach road and is listed as an 8-mile hike.
The "4-mile" hike we were on had 22 hikers plus two SFBG volunteers to lead. The pace was fairly leisurely, especially with regard to long breaks.
