Ascent Trip ReportStarted from a nearby residential street on the opposite side of I-691. Walked along the Merrimere Reservoir up to its north end. From here I intended to ascend along the Metacomet Trail, but missed the turnoff and ended up walking up along the road. First I went to the high point (the West Peak). Satisfied with that, I walked past the radio tower to a lookout. The view from the lookout was unlike anything I'd seen before: The skies were completely greyed out, so it felt like being at the end of the earth. I walked back along the roads to the Castle tower on the East Peak, and then back down along the Metacomet Trail to the North end of the reservoir. When I got to the bottom of the trail, I realized how I had missed the trail at the beginning of my hike -- the trail at that point crosses a small brook, which an earlier rainfall had turned into a raging stream. I gingerly crossed the stream and walked back down to my car. |
