Ascent Trip Report

Howell County has three high point candidates. I agree with the Covill's directions to the third point west of rt. 60, but I found a better route to the other two. From AM road near Howell 3 head NW on 60 about a third of a mile to an access road right off the highway that runs parallel to the highway. My map labels it County Road 1010 but I don't recall seeing any street signs. Head up this road. Just opposite a house with the number 133 on its mailbox at the road, there's as mall dirt road that crosses the railroad tracks and quickly runs into a locked gate. A US Forest Service sign explains that the land is a US Government lease and is open to hunters and fisherman subject to restrictions of state game laws. So access is not a problem and you don't need permission. They even built a wooden staircase so that you don't have to hop the barbed wire fence. From there it's a pleasant road walk. The second of the two points is near a fence and another gate. The land on the other side is in the neighboring county, but it's definitely higher. It beckoned me, so I rationalized that I'd better climb it and then check my map (in the car of course) to make sure where the county line is. My statistics thus combine all three Howell C points and the neighboring hill.
