Ascent Trip Report

I pulled into a driveway on the west side of Indiana 101 about 1.9 mi. south of I-74 (or 0.2 n. of Schneider Rd. --German for tailor--suggests who must have settled the area). The owner's adult daughter was doing yard work and I explained my quest for the Ripley County high point. In my experience my standard speech elicits one of two reactions--the majority wonder whether they need to fear this strange looking man (short, white beard, long braided pony tail, sloppy clothes) or whether he's just a harmless nut (they usually decide harmless and welcome me to look for whatever I'm after). But a minority are fascinated by the idea of county high pointing. She was one of the latter. She welcomed me to walk up the little rise a bit southwest of the barn (the cattle wouldn't bother me, she assured me--guess I look not only like an aging hippy but also a city boy).

On my way out she engaged me in more extended conversation. What was I doing out here in rural Indiana? Where was I from? Pittsburgh. Where was I headed--my summer home in Taos, New Mexico. That brightened her up considerably--she had spent time in Raton, NM and loves the area.
