Ascent Trip ReportAfter summiting Brasstown Bald my dad and I drove to South Carolina to Sassafras Mountain to hike up via the chimneytop gap foothills trail. And it should have been about 6 miles round trip but I made a stupid routefinding mistake which turned out to be a 20 minute detour. Needless to say I was pissed. After getting back to the real trail it was getting dark but we continued anyways. My dad was having trouble but he was determined to summit. We followed the obvious and well marked trail while lighting up the pitch black with our headlamps. We continued and reached the summit of my second winter state high point. I was excited but not as much as my dad who had been struggling the entire time. We descended via the road and ate Oreos. 2 down 48 to go.
