Ascent Trip ReportPart 1: (Blackhead)
Hiked up from Big Hollow Road. Hiked up Black Dome trail. Most was covered in a few inches of snow. The elevation gain above 3200 ft was a nice steady climb. I saw Bob Cat tracks in the snow and it made for some fun hiking at the Bobcat was sliding on the fresh powder on top of ice. This showed me where the ice was. I took a right and climbed up Blackhead. Several section were very icy on the west face between 3600 ft and 3700 ft. Above 3700 it was only snow and made for an easy hike through the Balsam and Fir. Reached the summit to find Christmas tree ornaments. I followed the Blue Escarpment trail a bit and saw a lot of ice so I turned around and descended towards Black Dome.
Part 2 (Black Dome): The climb up Black Dome was scary as my hiking partner went ahead of me. The one set of ledges at around 3600 ft (estimate) was a bit iffy as I did not have an Ice Axe and truly needed one but I made it over the ice with microspikes and hand holds from tree roots. The rest of the climb was fine once I found true snow again. The summit was wonderful. I could not have returned this was so we continued west as a pair. (I have bought snow shoes and crampons and will never make a summit in winter without Crampons in the backpack or on my feet again)
Part 3 (Thomas Cole)
The climb was easy. We avoided an icy 5 foot ledge by going off trail a bit. Cole has no views but we walked around the top a bit to make ourselves feel we made the summit the mountain.
(Parts 4 and 5)
We descended to Camel's Hump where we had a view of Windham. On this day the snow started to disappear around 3400 ft. By the time we reached Causal we returned to late Fall with bare ground. We made it back to the car with the rest of the afternoon a head of us. |
