Ascent Trip ReportA road/bushwack northwest bound .... 2.2 miles, 1h35 hours RT for both summits.
PB lists 2 Candidate High Point Areas for Nacogdoches County HP, however Area 2 and Button Mountain Southwest in the PB Library are one of the same. Also Button Southwest is wrongly named as it is to the Southeast of Button Mountain.
I used Bill Jacobs excellent TR of 2002 which should be read for additional information.
From the north side of Nacogdoches, Hwy intersection #59/259, we motored north on 259 for 5 miles to a left turn on TX204, 10.9 miles to the Town of Cushing and a right on FM225, .68 miles to a gated dirt road on the left, signed "Button Mountain Hunting Club, Posted" and "Lone Star Ltd. Gas Wells". There if no fencing on either side of the gate, telling me that the "Posted" is for vehicle traffic only !!!!
AREA 2 OR BUTTON MOUNTAIN SOUTHWEST ..... .3 miles from the TH.
I walked northwest up the dirt road 400 yards to a left turn, where I ascended in open deciduous woods steeply to the summit at 100+ yards..... open clear cut, I chose my spot at 31.82921, -94.84688, the PB coordinates puts the spot at a much lower elevation.
AREA 1 ..... 1 mile from the TH.
From Area 2 I descended back to the road where I continued about .4 miles, turned right and ascended the steep embankment to the top of the large flat 720 foot contour, with a perimeter road. This large area was strip mined long ago, today it is a fairly flat, tall evergreen open forest.
I walked to the southeast to a large open area with a gas pumping station, then I bushwacked northwest zig-zagging my way through the center of area in open woods, looking for high ground.
I went past the PB coordinates and chose my spot at GPS 31.83787, -94.85439, northwest end of the contour, 40 yards from the perimeter road.
I walked the perimeter road back to the main road to the TH. I estimate the one way distance from the TH at less than a mile.
