Ascent Trip Report

As far as I can determine, Simmons Mound is the 7th highest named summit point in Illinois. My son, Marshall, and I parked my car on the SW side of the mound where a jeep road ascends to the summit on the south side. It was only a few hundred feet of climbing on this steep road to a mowed summit with a summit benchmark. A metal post that once held a survey marker sign had been knocked to the ground and the sign looked like it had been mowed over, but it was still there. The mound's perimeter is surrounded in trees, but a good view is possible to the west. Despite its short hiking distance, this was an enjoyable highpoint.
