Ascent Trip Report

As far as I can determine, Squirrel Grove Mound is the 5th highest named summit point in Illinois. The mound is on private property, so my son, Marshall, and I tried to obtain permission from a farm located east of the mound, but no one was home. A farm field road appeared to head directly to the NE summit across a pasture. With reservation, we decided to drive on this road and get quickly out of sight, rather then park on the gravel road and hike up in full view of people passing by. The road led us to within a few dozen feet from the summit with good views in most directions. From here we determined that this summit was probably higher than the SW summit on Squirrel Grove Mound, which shares the same closed contour line elevation as the NE summit. This was not much of a climb, since we drove up, but we bagged another Illinois high point.
