Ascent Trip Reportafter a very late start i set out to find the trailhead, passing a truck load of about 10 hunters gathered around said truck, pointing and scheeming about where the prey might be, i slowed my speed, waved as if to say, please don't shoot me later i continued up the hill around a bend about a minute or 2 of seeing them i see a mid sized black bear climb up onto the road in front of me, pausing to look my way, his face seemed to say, I'm outa here, did you see those guys with the rifles? and he took off up the hill to my left just as quick as could be. as he neared the top of the hill i had finally managed to dig out my camera and squeeze off a few shots. My first Catskills black bear! 2nd ever. as he neared he top he turned to look at me once again, i gave a little beep with my horn to scare him into running some more, though i dont believe the hunters were close enough to hear me, which i considered before beeping. i knew they would be out of range and likely wouldn't know what i meant anyway. i continued up the hill towards the trailhead and realized that i was probably dead ahead of the running bear at this point but as i turned out the road continued on around the mountain and down the other side. i probably would not be running into his particular bear again today. the hike was nice and quiet, the ascent was pleasant and not very long. the firetower was closed for the season but most of it remains open until you reach the top so good unobstructed views of the surrounding ranges is possible. i headed back to the car with light to spare.
