Ascent Trip ReportMany options on this convoluted peak. Here are the 2 we used, no guide needed, no adverse signage (or signs of any sort for that matter!) in January '23.
Leave main road (on foot) at 16.4178, -86.3158, as described by Brett Mickelson. Follow steep dirt road past blue-roofed house, then abandoned side-road beginning at 16.4159, -86.3142 to end at 16.4129, -86.3143. Bushwhack/contour northeast (climber's left) a hundred yards through a slight saddle (relatively open) and find/cross barbed-wire fence. A "trail" ascends north towards the summit directly along the east side of this fence. The first two bumps (close together) seem to be a false summit, but have good views west. The true summit could be the third bump (heavily forested) at 16.4140, -86.3123, or the fourth bump (rocky with views east) at 16.4152, -86.3118.
From the rocky eastern summit, a much better trail descends northeast. Various side trails split off to ?, but the first turn (while descending) delivers one quickly to the top of a (failed?) development with eroded lots and dirt roads (not shown in current Google imagery), ultimately connecting to the main road at 16.4200, -86.3154 via the Diamond Rock Resort gate (unclear if operational). Our descent route, while much less bushwhacky and perhaps easier, would be nigh-impossible to figure out on the ascent. Maybe there is another way...
Good luck with the vines and razor grass. Is this even the highest peak on Roatan? You decide! |
