Ascent Trip ReportA dirt road/track/herd path hike southbound ...... 5.2km, 2h10 hours RT (all distances in this report are estimates)
We approached from the Canada side which I believe is the easiest way. From Chartierville (junction 257/210) we drove south on 257 for 3.1km to a left turn of Chemin Brise-Culottes, then east 3.3km to an unsigned Dirt Road on the right (chained-off), GPS 45.26727, -71.16375. Parked here this was my TH, the summit is to the south.
I walked the good "high clearance" Dirt Road south on a gradual ascent 1.5km (20 minutes) to small clearing with a Cabin on the right, great views to the west. As it continues the Dirt Road becomes a very rough track with a moderate ascent (a short section is a deep-rutted/rocky drainage bed) for the rest of the way. At .4km from the Cabin the track bends left (east) and in .2km comes to T-Junction with a grass track. Bushwack (steep climb) right of east 60 meters to the Boundary Swath (there is actually a good herd path from the T-Junction, look for it). There was some very fresh cuttings in the Swath at this spot. Monument 481 is to the left (eastbound) .24km.
I walked the Boundary Swath eastbound (northeast)on a herd path (probably animal) and in 40 meters saw a fairly new-looking Marker right on the Boundary Line, embedded in concrete "USA/CAN #481-2". I arrived at Monument 481 (2.4km, 50 minutes from TH) located on the highground of this immediate area, right at a 90 degree Boundary turn. 481 is a CI Monument with a new small Marker embedded in the old concrete base just beside the CI Monument, "USA & CB SURVEY, B+M, 2836".
The actual HP of this area is located to the northeast. Just north of the 481 Monument is the start of a herd path (look for a blue flag tape) that follows the ridge, skirting around some heavy blowdown, over a bump, to the HP at about .2km from the Monument. Once inside the woods the herd path is well blazed with orange flag tape and actually goes left-of/past the HP.
The HP is fairly obvious to the right, it has a small Glass Jar Canister with pieces of paper as a register, it was installed in 2010 by "Albee", I signed in. The glass jar does not have a solid cap, it had an inch of water on the bottom, also no register, just a few small pieces of paper. So if you are planing a trip to 481, a new Canister with a register would be appreciated. I chose my spot at GPS 45.25120, -71.16085, the PB coordinates puts the spot at a lower area. I added pink flag tape to the spot.
I returned the same way, the 2.6km descent taking 43 minutes.
