Ascent Trip Report

A long dirt-road/ATV-track hike culminated by a short bushwack ..... 15.6 km, 4h00 hours RT.

I used the route in Derek Standen's TR, the purpose of my TR is to add a few details, so one must read Derek if you want to get there via this route. I must say that Derek did an excellent job in finding this easy/straight forward route.
For today's hike I made sure to be dressed in Hunter's Orange .... I would meet up with a number of Hunters, I being the only person in the woods without a rifle.

We were visiting family in Ottawa so my approach was from the north. From the end of Hwy 417,exit 184, in Arnprior, I drove east on #17 for 10km to a left turn on hwy #508 (Calabogie Road), 39.1km southwest (pass Burnstown and the Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort) to a main intersection where hwy #508 turns right (a bank of Mailboxes on the left), I stayed left (straight) on Hydro Dam Road and continued 5.8km to a left turn over the bridge (straight ahead is the dam), then 1km to a T-junction where I turned right on Mountain Chute Road,.3km to a left on Hunt Camp Lane (OFSC E102, this road has "KM Markers"), 3.75km to a Dirt Road on the left (this Road is 100 meters past "KM Marker 4" ???).
This was my TH (Derek's 03.9km), the summit is to the east of south at 7.7km.

I walked the good "High Clearance Vehicle" Dirt Road to Carlton Camp in 35 minutes, 2 deer hanging from a near-by tree ..... there are no signs prohibiting entry/use of this Road, so a "High Clearance Vehicle" is able to drive this section, thereby cutting the hike almost in half. On my hike in, I passed/chatted with a number of Hunters, numerous Vehicles on the Road. From the Camp on it is a rough ATV Track.
At the Carlton Camp Entrance stay right as the track drops to Little Green Lake to a left turn (Derek's ref 07.1km) or take the track on the right 100 meters before the Camp which descends left to meet up at the bottom at 07.1km. This was the only place where I had some route-finding-problems.
My most enjoyable/interesting part of the hike started at Sullivan Lake, where the trail is mostly on open rock.

I left the ATV track and started my bushwack just beyond Derek's Option (km 10.8) at a beautiful open rock ridge. I took a 125 degree Magnetic Compass Line, wanting to hit the ridge right (north) of the summit.
My bushwack Line dropped to a low area before climbing to the beautiful open ridge where I turned left perhaps 200-300 meters to the summit area, I went beyond the summit to be sure of my destination (mostly all open walking except at a short section where the ridge drops to a wooded sag). The actual summit highground is at a small grassy clearing partly surrounded my small trees with a large erratic/lonely rock to one side. I chose my spot on the ground at GPS 45.13848, -76.91674. Outstanding views in all directions of typical north Ontario Country.
I ascended to the summit in 1h50 hours, descended in 1h35 hours and based on my normal walking pace I should have taken longer, so the distances given could be off .... or perhaps it's because I'm getting faster in the autumn of my year.

I was back to the TH with plenty of time to take in another short near-by climb to Dicksons Mountain with the Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort on its northern slopes.
