Ascent Trip ReportTypically I will not post a trip report on a "highpointing" endeavor as they are far less interesting to me than "peakbagging" so this may not serve as a very informative record for those HPing enthusiasts
Personal log -
Parents weekend at FSU, my family feeling sorry for me that my state highpointing trip got delayed due to the weekend activities in Tallahassee on my birthday so they tolerated me at least checking out a few county HPs in the panhandle on the way. The car loaded with Karen, Ben, and Sarah..oh and our new foreign exchange student Sasha from the eastern part of Russia (I mean way east of Siberia and on the border of China).
It was Sasha's second day with us and there was no way I was going to try to explain "highpointing" to her. Not when my own family questions my sanity and friends only get it when I am peakbagging in the mountains! We did Madison County on the way to Tally and she got to pick cotton from the full blooms in the fields nearby.
On my 50th Birthday the following morning and before the FSU vs NC State football tailgate party, Karen and I got up at 6:00 AM and headed up to check out Quincy and the county HPs of Gadsden. It was still dark at the FAMU campus so needless to say we forgot when the sunrises at this part of the state in late OCT. Sun rose shortly thereafter and we enjoyed the other sites and candidate sites on the way to Liberty County.
Liberty County has a lot of rolling clay hills and was attractive countryside. The only candidate site, I care to record in my personal log is at HP#4 where we were parked at a FH and walked out into the woods using my iphone application that showed my phone location relative to the closed contour. I found a pink flag around a tree where the ground fell in all directions. Went back to the car and looked up the last TR for this candidate point and noticed that Ben Lostacco had just tied that flag there a few months earlier.
It is strange to realize that someone from Canada (Ben L and Rose) had just tied this flag in southern FL not too long ago in pursuit of the same obscure goal. How many times have I followed his footsteps or I his in the past few years? And now my wife and I were parked next to the same FH. No, I am not going to even try to explain this hobby to Sasha!
