Ascent Trip Report

Unexpected. Based on other trip reports, I was certain I would get turned around at some point by soldiers, but I in fact found that the military base on the top of Mt Hermon is now abandoned and so I was able to get all the way to the summit. I parked in the large car park for the Mt Hermon Ski Resort and took the gondola up to the viewpoint. Then hiked along the road up, expecting to get stopped at a checkpoint at some point and planning on then bagging the lower Mitzpe Shelegim as a consolotion. A few official vehicles passed me and one guy stopped to ask if I needed help but then bemusedly left me to it when I said I didn't need any. I reached the turn-off to the main Mt Hermon summit and was surprised not to see a checkpoint, so kept going. I little further up I reached a couple of checkpoint buildings, but they were abandoned. I then reached what was the main gate to the base and it too was abandoned. I still half-expected to hear a shout from some still-occupied building, but in reality it was clear that the whole base had been abandoned for a while. The summit is covered in bunkers and defensive trench systems, so I wandered round for a while to make sure I visited whichever was the 'natural' HP. Although there weren't any warning signs, I figured there could be mines around, so didn't go wandering off base downslope. The clouds lifted briefly to allow me to gaze into Syria from the summit, as well as to see what is now clearly the main Israeli base on Mitzpe Shelegim. Quick walk back in the drizzle and then cable car down. About 7.5 km and 1:30 h there and back. Happy days.
