Ascent Trip ReportWent up from Elk Lake via Maccomb trail (Slide Brook) with the expectation to do Maccomb, SDix, and Edix. Turned out to be a gorgeous day and the view of Elk Lake from Maccomb was stunning. The hike up the slide was bloodpumping. Spent alot of time on the summits gazing. Went down the northeast side of Maccomb to Sdix, dodged some blowdown. The climb up SDix was easy and awesome (mostly all rock with brief stint in the woods along the ridge where i found the summit tree carving). I was headed to East Dix, but wasn't 100% confident of the route, and i didnt want to risk it alone so i turned back. I started worrying i was going down the wrong herd path and it seemed farther than what was necessary to reach the col. Went back up, looked at my map, everything looked right on paper, and started again, but I thought i was dropping much further than the 3700ft in the col and decided to bail out. Got home and looked what i did, i was fine, about .6 mi from Edix, which blows! I dont know why, but i just didnt manage to catch any glimpses of EDix to give me some reassurance, that ultimately is why i bailed out. Despite being pissed at myself for a half hour, it was a great day. Two breathtaking summits on a beautiful day (best of the 46), full sun, temperature in the 50s and hiking out with a t-shirt felt exhilarating vs the past two rainy weekends. The hike down the maccomb slide was stunning with elk lake in the forefront. Met a couple from NYC heading down from maccomb on the slide and talked to them for a bit. A pro of bailing out on EDix gives me an excuse to do the great slide from 73 and get an altimeter. Hike total, 12.5mi, 3xxx' ascent, easy on the legs.
