Ascent Trip Report

Hiked in via Beverly Turnpike trail (18 hrs car to car). Climbed the East Ridge route following some great beta from Franklin. After summiting, we went over to Sherpa Rock (the balanced rock) to investigate. From the summit it looks to be the same height. We got up on the pedestal and rigged up a makeshift rope protection for myself using a prussik and by slinging the rope twice over the ledge halfway up. We figured it was dang near impossible to throw a rope over the top, and you wouldn't know if it was going to stay or not. Anton gave me a shoulder stand up to the ledge, where I stuck a cam in and clipped the tiny rusty bolt. Now on belay, I was able to make the final move to the top mostly by pulling myself up using a small handhold. It felt quite awesome to be standing on top of this thing! Looking over at the true summit, the balanced rock feels about a foot shorter. There was no register, but an old rolled up license plate. I rapped off and we headed back to the car, arriving at 10:30pm. LONG day!
