Ascent Trip ReportMt. Fuji is such an iconic mountain that I was compelled to climb it even though it might be a better mountain to look at from afar than to climb. The reported overcrowding reminiscent of Times Square or Shibuya scramble crossing was not encouraging either.
As it turns out, it was not that bad probably due to various factors, some of them sheer luck. The weather was almost perfect despite a Typhoon & its associated rains just before my ascent. The crowd was moderate since only the Yoshida route was open, it was weekdays, and the crowd might not have come back to pre-Covid level yet.
It is possible to climb Mr. Fuji as a day hike as most visitors start from one of 5th station trailheads. Following the usual practice of of climbing Mr. Fuji, I decided to see the daybreak and sunrise from the rim. This necessitated spending a night at one of numerous hiking huts the day before. With two days to spare I decided to climb from the foothill instead of the usual 5th station trailheads. This made the total trip to about 30 miles, but that is certainly reasonable with two days.
As it turns out, the foothill of Mt. Fuji is very beautiful and there were no other hikers until I reached 5th station. Overall this was a worthwhile trip. |
