Ascent Trip Report8/27/2011 (Day 2 of 2. Started from Garfield Ridge Campsite)
I was up at 6am and decided to have my coffee and breakfast as Lil Yeti continued to sleep. Around 8 a.m. the caretaker came by to say he is headed down off the mountain. Since this was an unplanned evacuation, he wasn’t quite sure where he would go for the next couple of days.
It was 9 am before we were all packed up and ready head for Galehead, last ones out of the campsite actually! Man, the Garfield Ridge trail is VERY technical and with full packs Lil Yeti and I struggled a bit to get down to the col about a half mile from the campsite. From there it was a series of ups and downs but not too bad. We made it to the Galehead Hut at about 11:30 am. After having lunch at the hut and leaving our packs there we headed up the Frost trail at around 12. We had a great view back to the hut from the overlook just before the summit of Galehead. We reached the peak at 12:20. After picking up our packs at the hut we headed back to the Gale River Trail. We heard the first part was steep, but after coming off Garfield this morning, this part of the Gale River trail was not bad at all. The new portion of the Gale River Trail has been completed and was quite nice. I guess it cuts out two crossings of the Gale River. Since it was so new, it was a bit soft and actually felt quite nice to our soar feet.
We reached the parking lot at 3:35 where Lil Yeti waited while I went to get the car at the Garfield trail head parking.
