Ascent Trip ReportWent in Saturday, camped ~3,200’. The climber’s trail up from Twin Falls is in pretty decent shape, but that might just be because the vegetation is off to a late start right now. The climber’s camping area is much more snowy than it was last year on Memorial Day weekend. Really bad winds on the raised hill we chose to camp on. Lucikly the went away as the night rolled on.
We got a 5am start, took us about 7hrs to reach the summit due to really poor snow quality. An overcast night meant no evaporative cooling, and a crust that was way too punchable.
Ridge to summit was in great shape and relatively uneventful, except for the fact that I made it more difficult by doing a silly mixed climbing move to get down some rock. I threw my trekking pole and axe down to a ledge so I could use my hands and…the axe slow-rolled off the ledge and down onto the icicle glacier. If you’re looking for a free Petzl axe, go check it out! Lucikly terrain was moderate enough that I could mostly go to the summit and back unafraid, there were jus a few sections where I really needed to focus on good crampon technique.
What everyone says about this climb/summit, is true: the views really are some of the best I’ve experience of the nearly 80 peaks I’ve climbed in the Chugach.
Hike out was a slow and steady sufferfest, but we made it to Moose’s Tooth just before closing. Pizza is really our main goal on these climbs, anyway.
