Ascent Trip Report

Big thanks to Andrew from adding his TR from I believe the actual summit of Big Craggy the day before, giving me a heads up of the road closure along the FSR (added by my count, an additional 2.85 miles from where I parked to the TH).

I left Tacoma at about midnight and arrived at the Honeymoon Campground at 0400 on Sunday, meeting Chris and Isaac who had spent the night there. We packed up and drove as far as we could. The road is beginning to wash out, I don't remember seeing this when I was here in October. The road has maybe 20-30 good blowdowns across it, requiring you to go up/over/around.

Snow started right around the mine, that's where I switched to sportivas from runners and we put on snowshoes. The snow cover is extremely sparse in areas. We followed the trail, skirting the base of the SE spur, wondering why all the tracks have you passing it, and instead moving up the mountain further west. We decided making the spur looked like it should be the standard route, and that's what we did. Maybe I was just looking at tracks from summer and there's a climbers path?

On the upper mountain Chris and Isaac stuck to rock, while I stayed on snow. We weaved through rock when cresting up to the summit ridge, making it on the eastern end, and then walking west to the summit along a heavily corniced ridge. Couldn't have asked for better weather on this one. Could have asked for better road maintenance.

Returned back to the car at 1700. Took A LOT of breaks to enjoy the weather, and were on the summit for nearly 2 hours. Additional 2 hours needed for road walk both ways.
