Ascent Trip Report

OK the trip was over and we were all banged up after 50 miles of backpacking and peakbagging in one of the more remote and rugged wilderness areas I have been. The trails gave most of my party swollen knees, ankles and the like and they were all ready to go home and await the pick-up van. I was dissapointed that I only climbed three of the top 10 peaks in Utah as the time, and rugged terrain made it hard to go after more.

As I awaited the van I got a wild hair to start up for the Uinta River canyon BM that is on the USGS map as the formation near it are interesting the backcountry looked very different than the 13k peaks we were playing with all week. At least one more good view and hike before heading to the airport. I knew I did not have time to summit the BM from this location as it would be a half day or more and I only had more than 1 hour or so, but I started up from the campground turnoff road at what appeared to be some subpeaks of interest. As it turns out, each were false peaks. I foolishly left in the rain in my keene's instead of hiking boots, and the the wet class 2 steep hillside torn my blisters open as i slid in the mud and drizzle. The occasional cactus needles was not pleasant either.

I have nice views of the area on the way up but my hurt knee and ankle became more agitated and I realized this was a foolish last minute hike and I turned around near some of the false peaks and smaller outcroppings and hobbled down the slopes. If I had more time and was prepared properly a full day hike to the BM looked like a fun excursion for another trip.
