Ascent Trip Report9 of us started out for the annual backpacking trip but we lost two just before starting at the Henry Fork TH. My good climbing companion Marc (and most fit man of ANY age I have ever had the pleasure to hike with) celebrated his 64th birthday by rushing back to SLC with his brother because of horrible pains. He ended up having a swollen prostrate and was given a catheter and amazingly, he sucked it up, found a ride, and returned to the Trail head 24 hours later with his brother Scott, backpacked 12.5 miles uphill from Henry Fork TH to Gunsight Pass and caught up with us. Thus only 7 of our original party summited our first Utah 13er.
The other 7 of us backpacked to Dollar Lake and set up camp and fed mosquitos until bedtime. At night we were awaken by noisy coyotes. That next morning at 8 AM we headed up the small grassy backbone of one of the western shoulders of Gilbert which was steep, unmarked, but spectacular on the way up showing views of all the lakes and mountains.
As we approached our first snow pack we began to hear coyotes again (yes, in the monring) and we saw many mule deer prancing around in the valley below us. The altitdue was doing its toll on some of my group (all from FL below 100 feet in elevation) and we began to spread out based on fitness and acclimation. I tried to keep up with 21 year old Nate, who kicked my 49-year old butt up the steeper class 2 boulders and even strong Hernan blew his ankle out trying to stay with us in this horrible terrain.
There are not paths just pick a path and go. Nate summitted first about 5 minutes ahead of me. I climbed the peak from camp to summit in 2 hours 45 minutes. My son Ben, and Hernan on his bad ankle joined us within 5-10 minutes. Andy, Wayne, and Bryan all made the summit within 30 minutes of us. Andy, Nate and I attempted to go for Gunsight Peak. Andy bailed out at the saddle as the downhill rocks beat him up and I stopped due to a swollen knee after a short upclimb and decided to save it for King's Peak the following day. Smart choice as in the following days we had many ankle's rolled and knees tweaked in the rounded cobblestone trails.
Nice hike but watch your feet and wear good ankle support boots. This peak has no class 3 scrambling like Kings Peak and Roberts (at least from the attack we chose from Dollar Lake) but I found the class 2 material to be more abusive on the feet, anles, and knees, as you could never take weight off by using your arms.
Once we moved camp and backpacked up and over Gunsigh Pass I started to hear the Holders in their walkie talkies. they could not hear us but we knew they were coming so we slowed down and awaited them on top of the Pass. The nine of us reunited climbed back into the backcountry wilderness and enjoyed a total of 6 days backpacking in the High Unita Wilderness. I summitted 3 of the 13ers, Gilbert, Kings, and Roberts. So did Nate. Bryan only got Gilbert. The Holders only got Kings. Hernan, Andy, Wayne, and Ben got both Gilbert and Kings.
