Ascent Trip Report

For the last day on the trail during our stay at Heart Lake, Jim, Gary and I decided to bag the trail-less summits of Street and Nye. After breakfast, we walked along Heart Lake to the spot where the herd path for Street and Nye breaks off of the old Nye ski trail. The first mile or so was relatively flat, with some descent down to Indian Pass Brook, which we were able to rock hop across due to the recent dry conditions. Our ascent began after the crossing, and we began to follow an old stream bed, which looked as if it would be quite messy had it not been so dry. We noticed some old cast iron parts along the trail, and talked about what it must have been like to live deep in the vast Adirondack wilderness. As we ascended, we noticed more and more blow-down that looked to be fairly recent, but had been mostly cleared from the trail. We reached the well-marked trail junction for the summits, and decided to head up Nye first. It was a very short distance from the junction to the summit of Nye, though we were not greeted by much of a view other than where some of the trees on the wooded summit had succumbed to the aforementioned blow down. We ate our sandwiches and shared the summit with two students of SUNY ESF who planned to complete their 46 the next day. After lunch, we headed back to the junction for our ascent of Street. I hiked ahead of Gary and Jim, and had some time to explore the summit when I arrived. I found a short, though thick, trail that led to an excellent view of the MacIntyre Range and the Dix Range. We took photos, including of a strange creature which had been spotted at each of the summits that Gary and I visited in the past few days, and I began my descent ahead of Jim and Gary. When I reached the end of the unmaintained trail, I headed up the “long trail” to the summit of Mount Jo, which offered some nice views despite its modest altitude. I headed back to our campsite on the “short trail,” and changed into my swim suit to cool off in Heart Lake after the third excellent day on the trail.
