Ascent Trip Report

Driving from the tip of the Keweenaw, we drove through Ontonagon on 64, then stayed on the lake shore road until we turned left on South Boundary Road. This road is very woodsy and makes for a pleasant drive through one of the oldest stands of hardwood forests in the region. Eventually we turned on the road that was signed for the Summit Peak Trailhead. Follow this road until the end, where it turns into a parking lot. You need to have your Michigan State Park passport, which we conveniently already purchased when we camped in Baraga State Park the night before. From here it is a half mile walk to the top. 2/3 the way up the path turns to wooden steps. There is a nice vista off to the left, and you pass by some small cliffs. There was a lot of fog in the area which added to anticipation of claiming another highpoint. Once the deckway ends at the base of the observation tower, we took a right about 120 degrees and walked into the woods about 50'. Someone had kindly put two triangular rocks on a mound that jutted out about two vertical feet. This, we agreed, was the highest point.
