Ascent Trip ReportA typical volcano ascent, steep and loose in places.
Sun 18: Our party of 8 assembled in Ankara. There was a delay as Bob's baggage didn't arrive (it caught up with him 3 days later, he borrowed gear in the meantime). Our guide Recep met us and we drove SE, leaving the D750 at Aksaray, arriving at the village Karkin NW of the mountain then taking an obscure road (see saved GPS track), unpaved in places, which zig-zagged its way up to the Karbeyaz Hotel (N38.16113 E34.16449, 1961m) where the staff produced a late meal.
Mon 19: We were up at 5, watching the sun rise as we breakfasted. The hotel is at the trailhead (there is also camping). We started hiking at 6, initially heading uphill aiming slightly left, crossing a shallow gully then angling left on a shallow rake, then climbing into an obvious gully trending right. This becomes steep and loose and care is needed as it is easy to dislodge rocks onto one's companions. The gully opens out and finishes at the crater rim. The highest point is to the right from the saddle but first we turned left and followed an easy ridge to the lower, NE summit (N38.12864 E34.16915, 3235m, P50m GPS) which is marked by a rough shelter cairn, also a toy lorry on a pole!
We returned to the saddle and continued round to the higher (SW) summit, skirting R of two minor rocky summits en route. The highest point is a block of fractured rock, N38.12654 E34.16511, 3268m GPS, exactly matching the expected elevation. Conditions were hazy with high cloud.
After 30 minutes we headed down. At the steep loose section we descended one at a time so that any rocks dislodged would not endanger people below. A large croatian party had summitted after us and we were keen to get down below the loose gully before they started descending it. We then retraced our upward line back to the hotel and enjoyed a cool beer before heading for the Aladaglar Mountains for our next objective, Kizilkaya (Demirkazik).
Timings: ascent 4h30 to NE summit, 1h to main summit, 4h descent.

GPS track to follow. Guide was Rejep Ince, climber and proprietor of Aladaglar Camping.
Logistics: we were a group of 8 on an Ultra bagging trip arranged through Anatolian Adventures. They arranged accommodation, transport and a local mountain guide. |
