Ascent Trip Report

Have to obtain a day use permit from the Rangers at the Crater's of the Moons National Monument office but they will allow hiking the volcanic cones and the north side of the highway also. This is the taller of the two cones on the what they call the "North side" and there is only one cone on the National Monument property that is taller. Access was blocked to that cone (road repairs) so I closed out my day with one more training hike. This cone is not as exciting as the others within the public area as it more fully vegetated with grasses and sages and other chaperral type vegetation. It is misleading how high this cone is from the road as I set off for a quick hike and when I got to the car, our rental vehicle looked tiny.
