Ascent Trip ReportNo tresspassing signs ughhhhh. So I parked beyond the closed ski area parking lot in the State Forest by the Kelly Canyon Creek. I began an open country bushwhack through the tall grasses and flowers of the eastern most slopes that appeared to be cleared.
I think I was buzzing in and out of the forest lands and the ski resort although I could find nobody to clarify. I ended up moving up near the ski lifts as the slopes turned from green to blue to black in pitch. Once i reached the main hub of ski lifts it was abandoned and relatively flat back there I found a nice maintenance road to the next tier of ski lifts and a cell tower access.
My hand sketched map was confusing relative to the amount of 4 wheel roads up there and I eventually made a wrong turn and headed down a steep dirt road past the last lift and it eventually headed down slope to some remote parking area and I realized was off course. Climbing back up around 250 feet of extra gain I found the turn off that stayed up high on the ridge and to Kelly Mountain. I struggled to gain my direction again but finally found the towers at the top and the trail to the NW peak but only after rambling around on far too many trails up on the ridge. I recommend taking a good recent aerial and topo map and you can cut the distance and gain down by not going off course like I did.
Amazingly I even made a wrong turn on a road that looked exactly like the trail I came up and stumbled on to a snow shoe trail that was not taking me home and earned more needles gain on the way down shown on the subsequent TR of the NW peak.
Views along the upper ridges were nice and the trails flat and the yellow asters were in full bloom and quite colorful against the dark green conifers.
Started at 9:30 AM got lost summited NW peak after Kelly around 10:45 and was all the way down by 11:40, but this leg was half the trip. 2 hours and 10 minutes total. I jogged part of the way down to save time where the roads were safe enough but had to fast walk the ski slopes.
