Ascent Trip Report

While standing on the summit of the County HP and Prom HP Bonneville, I was a bit dissapointed in that the climb had a lot of difficult talus and bushwhacking and could have offerred a more glamorous summit. The weather structure that looked a like dog house and the cairn were not drawing me in and then, I saw the beautiful snow covered gullies leading up to nearby Snow Peak. Obviously lower in elevation and with a deceptive lower saddle, I thought why not slip over there quickly?

The saddle looks only 400 feet lower but there is a steeper drop off near the base of the saddle that you do not see until you are committed and the bushwhacking becomes an easy scramble route through some large boulders. The snow packs take on long sloping ridges on the upclimb and soon the material of the mountain turns to a very unstable slate like rock which is best to avoid by heading around the more gentle right side of the mountain. From the summit the views here are far better than Bonneville and I enjoyed solitude by the cairn marking the summit. The wind was very gusty and I became cold and repeated my steps back to Bonneville Peak. I rate the experience of Snow Peak better than Bonneville and the fact I had to earn it through over 2,500 feet of gain through Bonneville made it that much better.

Snow Peak is a nice addition to your county highpoint quest of Bonneville Peak without the clutter of snow ski towers and more solitude (2011-07-14). Photo by William Musser.
