Ascent Trip Report

I did this hike in cold, snowy conditions, midweek in January, and had the place pretty much to myself.

As previous trip reports note, the best parking is on the left, just before the stone gate pillars at the top of Sand Pond Road. There are a ton of "No Trespassing" signs--however, if you walk through the gate and very shortly turn left on North Sand Pond Road, you are soon on NJ State Game Lands, so using the roads for hiking access seems plausible. See this map. The road takes you around the lake and then uphill, where you leave it for a short bushwhack (private land but not posted) to the 1495-foot spot elevation area.

I was fortunate to be able to walk in packed-snow treads from a Jeep that had driven the road. Once around the lake I left the road for the bushwhack uphill and I was postholing a bit through breakable crust--not super fun but manageable. The woods were quite open on this cold winter day. A number of rock humps mark the highest ground, and I touched all of them. LIDAR data shows that points 1480+ and 1476 nearby are lower and need not be visited.

While descending from the high point area back to the lake I heard a chainsaw away to the north. And while driving up the road, a truck was coming down and I had to go into a turnout in the narrow lane. Other than that, I didn't see or hear anyone else on this Wednesday morning.
